Cleaning

The situation in Mälaren reflects global water pollution issues. Studies have shown the pervasive effects of microplastics on marine life, with disturbing reports of these plastics now detected in human bodies—even in developing fetuses. By 2050, it is projected there could be more plastic than fish in our oceans. In light of this, Christeseva confronts a critical question: How do we unite communities to combat this escalating crisis through creative and cultural practices?

In Fall 2024, Ludmila Christeseva joined the Intercult: Turning the Tide (TTT) artist residency program with the Jätterena Mälaren project. She followed the important work of local divers cleaning the lakes and explored the impact of environmental contamination on Mälaren, one of Sweden’s most vital sources of drinking water.

Recipe Sharing and Knowledge Exchange: A Vital Practice

Ludmila Christeseva has created a provocative video showcasing the preparation of a symbolic fish soup, made from various harmful ingredients she calls the “catch of the day.” This act of serving the soup is further emphasized through a collection of merchandise and a franchise toolkit concept. The toolkit features a thoughtfully designed array of products, including placemats, aprons, posters, and even a kit for recreating a fish using recycled plastic tile crosses. The idea is to inspire communities to engage and reflect on the costs of inaction, as well as the toxic consequences that seep into our food chain, health, and future. Ludmila Christeseva advocates for fostering communal awareness and embracing our shared responsibility to protect water resources and the environment.

Ludmila Christeseva’s symbolic soup recipe includes the following ingredients:

Plastic bottle – representing pollution that persists in the environment for centuries.
A handful of plastic bags – colorful but hazardous, symbolizing their omnipresence in nature.
Discarded fishing net – a silent killer for marine life.
Four rusted batteries – toxic remnants leaking poison into water ecosystems.
One liter of cloudy, polluted water – a stark metaphor for the contamination of our water sources.
Optional ingredient:

Mirena hormonal spiral – an additional symbolic element that reflects the harmful impact of microplastics on both the environment and human health.
